Don't put me down for the book win as i already have it (and a fantastic read it is too, though waiting for the next one is one of those bad/good things (you want it to come out, but would rather the author got it right rather than rush it simply to satisfy impatient souls such as myself)) And wouldn't be fair for me to have a second copy when someone who doesn't own it misses out on the chance to be introduced. With regards to what people would pay for, i think the main thing would be a name - whether a character, a place, a sword, a ship, a fighting move...people like seeing their own name in print. We're all a bit egotistical like that. Something else might be things like a specific scene. Eg. Can pay for a certain character to die in a way. If worried about handing over quite so much of the creative process only for someone to choose a piano falling out of a building and not fitting at all with the rest of the book, could offer potential choices and let someone choose which one you write. Or have two characters, both about to die/live and you can choose which one gets to survive and which one unfortunately falls to their death... On the understanding that the other character who survives will be able to cover what else was needed of him/her. Or maybe even choose which one dies first and which one second (im a bit obsessed with a death scene, sorry.) Maybe a specific quote/line/joke somewhere in the text - even if again you only give them a choice between a few. Everyone loves a bit of power (whether real or imaginary) and to see a choice that you have made in a book gives you a little bit of pleasure. Alternatively, could offer the option to receive an ARC once the book was complete instead of the standard version. I know they can be somewhat of a rare jewel to tempt the hardened fan. That would save on the potential for possibly compromising the story for the sake of selling input into it, excluding the sale of names where it is easier to work in (some version of a name, anyway).

Heard great things about this, put meld down!
As for things people might pay for in kickstarter. Artists might pay to design a cover with a caveat of it not being crap? People might pay for names of characters but also places, maybe pay to have a world-building gods/legend story in the world it's set in that they get to decide on the idea for?
